Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Valley AIDS Network (VAN). As a non-profit, the time and effort our volunteers contribute is essential to our agency and our clients. We are grateful for your support and hope this will be a meaningful experience for you as well.

Below you will find information on our current volunteer opportunities. You may also call the VAN office at (540) 568-8838 and a staff member will discuss all open opportunities with you. Due to the highly private nature of our work, all volunteers must sign a confidentiality form. If you have any additional comments, concerns, or questions, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to working with you!

Listed below are some of our current volunteer opportunities. Individual openings will be explained upon completion of your application. Please contact VAN with any additional questions.

Special Events

VAN hosts several events, such as fundraisers and educational workshops, throughout the year. These events are where we are most in need of volunteers. For example, our annual Tour & Taste bike ride and wine tasting, held in September, is a very popular event and we are always in need of volunteers to help it run smoothly and productively. For this event and others, we have a variety of volunteer opportunities available.

Food Pantry Collection and Delivery

VAN has an on-site food pantry available to our clients. Unfortunately, our largest funding source for this pantry has been completely cut. As a result, we rely heavily on donations to keep the pantry running. As a volunteer for the food pantry, you will be able to collect non-perishable foods, toiletries, and/or paper products, and donate them to VAN. One of our newer initiatives is for individuals who grow their own food to donate extra food to our food pantry project. For additional information on how to help with collection and on the types of items we can use, please contact VAN directly.

Volunteers assisting in delivery will be able to pick up food from the VAN pantry and deliver it to clients living within our service area. Although some of our clients are quite spread out, a majority live in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, or in the Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County area. VAN fills this volunteer opportunity on an as-needed basis.

Opportunities for Proficient Spanish, French, or Chinese Speakers

VAN has numerous opportunities available for volunteers who are multilingual. These opportunities range from acting as a “buddy” and guide for new immigrants adjusting to American culture, or assisting with English language learning. Please contact VAN if you are multilingual and would like to get involved.

Our process for becoming a volunteer is quite simple. All you have to do is fill out the Volunteer Form by clicking the button below. Once your application has been received, one of our staff members will contact you to discuss your application.

In order to ensure the confidentiality of our client’s information, we ask all volunteers to sign two forms: the HIPAA and Client Privacy Quick Reference, and the Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement. Both serve to ensure volunteers understand proper techniques for securing client privacy.
