Serving the central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

ABOUT US

MISSION STATEMENT

The Valley AIDS Network, in collaboration with community partners, strives to compassionately meet the needs of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS with a goal of moving them toward better health and self sufficiency; to raise awareness and prevent the spread of the virus through education and to serve as an advocate for those affected by the AIDS epidemic.

Who We Are.. Where We've Been.. Where We're Going...

Brief History:

The Valley AIDS Network was founded in 1989.  The organization is funded primarily through two major federal grants, Ryan White Title II and HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS), a HUD administered grant.

On September 24th, 2005 VAN and IIHHS entered into a partnership allowing greater access and collaboration opportunities to a wealth of community health, human services, education and other agencies and organizations in the area.  This increased visibility and recognition in the community enables VAN to enlist additional services and assistance for our clients and their families.

VAN's Challenges:

Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and removing the stigma that goes along with the disease has not been an easy battle.  Many clients have been discriminated against and publicly condemned for having HIV/AIDS.  These attitudes and behaviors are due to lack of education, information and awareness of the illness.  VAN's service area covering over 4,000 square miles in predominantly rural areas with no public transportation poses unique challenges.  Many clients must travel 1-3 hours to access specialized HIV medical services at University of Virginia Health System's Infectious Disease Clinic.
